NEPAL’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, resigned on Tuesday, a day after one of the country’s deadliest crackdowns on protesters in recent years left at least 19 people dead.
In a letter to the president, the 73-year-old leader stated: “I have resigned from the post of prime minister with effect from today, in order to take further steps towards a political solution and resolution of the problems.”
The demonstrations began on Monday, with protesters demanding the government lift its ban on social media and address widespread corruption. Despite the partial restoration of apps on Tuesday, unrest continued in several cities.
Rights group Amnesty International reported that security forces had used live ammunition against demonstrators during Monday’s protests, which resulted in multiple fatalities.
Oli, who began his fourth term in office last year after his Communist Party formed a coalition with the centre-left Nepali Congress, has faced growing public discontent over political instability, corruption, and sluggish economic development in the Himalayan nation of 30 million people.
