The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Chapter, paid a courtesy visit to His Royal Majesty, Asagba of Asaba, Professor Epiphany Azinge, on Wednesday, 13th December 2024.
The delegation, led by the State Chairman, Mr Churchill Oyowe, described the reception by the monarch as “overwhelming and unprecedented.”
Expressing gratitude, Mr Oyowe lauded Asaba’s peaceful nature since its creation in 1991, attributing it to the exemplary traditional leadership of the Asagba. “Asaba has remained a place for all, a home for indigenes and non-indigenes alike,” he said, adding that the city’s accommodating spirit continues to foster unity and growth.
Highlighting the city’s rapid development, Mr Oyowe remarked, “Asaba is not only the fastest-growing capital city in Nigeria but also in West Africa. Your reign, Your Majesty, will further strengthen this atmosphere of progress for everyone living here.”
The NUJ Chairman also informed the Asagba of their upcoming News Week, an event aimed at evaluating the union’s achievements and challenges over the past year. “It will be a moment for stock-taking and reflection on how far we have fared,” he said.
In his response, the Asagba warmly welcomed the delegation to the palace, expressing gratitude for their kind words. “We are committed to an open-door policy, welcoming visitors and fostering inclusivity. This hospitality is a hallmark of Asaba’s identity and a key factor in its current standing as a state capital,” he said.
Acknowledging the importance of journalism, the Asagba praised the profession as “a beacon of hope in nurturing democracy, fighting authoritarianism, and driving national development.” He emphasised the vital role of investigative journalism in modern times, noting its transformation into a dynamic and activist force.
“Nigerians expect accurate and unbiased reporting,” the Asagba reminded the journalists. “Your work must protect the rights of the people and uphold the highest standards of truth and fairness.”
The visit concluded with the monarch offering his blessings to the union and the land. He expressed hope that their efforts would continue to serve the public good and inspire growth within the profession.
