ABUJA – The National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has intervened in a dispute concerning the upcoming leadership election for the Warri Correspondents Chapel, ordering the immediate reinstatement of all previously disqualified aspirants.
In a directive issued on Thursday and addressed to the Chairman of the Delta State Council, the National Secretary, Achike Chude, instructed that the electoral process must proceed as planned.
However, the letter, a copy of which was made available to newsmen in Abuja, contained a specific clause for the screening committee.
“You are hereby requested to reinstate all those previously disqualified from participating in the process,” the statement read in part.
“However, you are to thoroughly screen the three contestants to ensure that only those who meet the required qualifications are allowed to contest.”

The directive creates a nuanced path forward for the chapel’s election. While it overturns the initial ban on the candidates, it simultaneously empowers the state council to conduct a rigorous qualification check before the election proceeds.
The letter, referenced “RE: WARRI CORRESPONDENTS ELECTION,” was also copied to the Vice President/Secretary of Zone F and the Chairman of the Warri Correspondents Chapel, ensuring all relevant parties are aware of the National Secretariat’s position.
The intervention by the national body aims to ensure a fair and inclusive electoral process in the Warri chapel, balancing the need for broad participation with adherence to the union’s constitutional guidelines on eligibility.
