THE Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, has called on residents of Warri to embrace peace and avoid actions that could reignite tensions among ethnic nationalities in the city.
Rising from its congress held on Monday, 22nd September 2025, at the state-of-the-art Chief Government Ekpemupolo Press Centre in Warri, the body appealed to the Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo and other residents to shun violence and sustain the fragile harmony in the oil-rich city.
“The media remains committed to fostering peace in Warri. We call on all stakeholders to put the collective good above divisive actions,” the communiqué stated.
The congress also charged journalists covering recent agitations in Warri to be guided by professionalism and fairness.
“We urge our colleagues to uphold objectivity in their reportage, and remind social media handlers that reckless posts can fuel avoidable conflict,” the union cautioned.
On security, the NUJ expressed concern over the spate of child kidnappings in Agbarho Kingdom, Ughelli North Local Government Area, urging security agencies to act decisively.

The body also decried the recurring cult clashes in the community.
“The safety of children must not be compromised, and security operatives must urgently stem the tide of cult-related violence,” it warned.
The congress commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what it described as “legacy projects across the state, particularly in Warri, Uvwie and neighbouring areas.” However, it pressed the governor to fast-track ongoing road and drainage works as the dry season approaches.
Similarly, the union urged the state government to urgently reconstruct the Udu Express Junction/ECN Road, a major route linking several local government areas, and to fix the dilapidated FUPRE Junction section of the East-West Road.
The communiqué was signed by the drafting committee: Comrade Sir Jimitota Onoyeme (Chairman), Comrade Elo Edremoda (Secretary), Elder Dele Ogunyemi and Comrade Onyekachukwu Meluwa.
