Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

THE Governor of Ondo State, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Thursday paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s fallen military heroes and reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and empowerment of their widows.

Speaking at the grand finale of the 2026 Armed Forces and Remembrance Day celebrations at the Government Cenotaph, Alagbaka, Akure, the governor said the annual event symbolised the nation’s highest honour for heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.

He noted that it also recognised the courage of living veterans and serving personnel who continue to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Dr Aiyedatiwa stressed that the occasion went beyond remembrance, describing it as a platform for honour, support and empowerment, particularly for the widows of fallen heroes whose strength and resilience remain a source of inspiration.
According to him, the Ondo State Government was fully aware of the challenges faced by these widows and remained committed to improving their welfare through sustained support, opportunities and recognition.

The governor disclosed that the Emblem Appeal Fund, earlier launched, had so far attracted an initial sum of ₦5 million, in addition to his personal donation of one month’s salary, alongside contributions from individuals and organisations at both personal and corporate levels.

As part of the empowerment programme, Dr Aiyedatiwa announced that the state government had approved and released N50 million for the disbursement of interest-free microcredit loans to 120 widows and dependants of fallen heroes considered for 2026.

He explained that the zero-interest loan scheme, which has become a regular feature of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day in the state, would be sustained regardless of prevailing economic conditions.

The initiative, he said, was designed to support beneficiaries’ businesses and enable them to cater adequately for their families.

He added that the loan per beneficiary had been increased from N200,000 to between N450,000 and N500,000.

The governor commended all stakeholders, both military and civilian, for their cooperation in ensuring the success of the 2026 celebration.

He particularly praised the various security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps, for their significant roles in safeguarding lives and property across the state.

He noted that Ondo State had been recognised as one of the most peaceful and safest states in the country, assuring that his administration would continue to support security agencies within available resources.

However, he urged residents to remain vigilant, stressing that security should not be left solely in the hands of the authorities.

In her vote of thanks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for demonstrating genuine
