A startling discovery in Kano State has sent shockwaves through the Daneji community and surrounding neighbourhoods after a python escaped from the residence of former Accountant General of the Federation, Mr Ahmed Idris.
The python, along with a crocodile and a lion cub, was recovered by local authorities and relocated to the Kano Zoo, where the animals are now under proper care.
Sadik Kura Muhammad, Managing Director of the Kano Zoo, confirmed the retrieval of the wild animals from Idris’s residence.
The incident caused considerable fear among residents, who remained on edge until the animals were safely evacuated.
Locals from Daneji, Mandawari, Kabara, and Soron Dinki expressed their anxiety, saying they were unable to rest until the python was captured.

In a radio interview, Muhammad stated that the animals were voluntarily handed over by the former AGF, who possessed a valid licence to keep wild animals.
At the time of removal, none of the animals had reached a level of maturity that posed immediate danger.
However, Muhammad noted that in accordance with the Wild Animal Law, such species must be relocated to appropriate facilities—particularly once they mature—to support their conservation and safety.
“The lion was still a cub, posing no harm. However, once animals reach a certain age, they must be transferred to a zoo,” Muhammad said.
“I visited the residence and confirmed that the animals were not yet dangerous.
“Nevertheless, following concerns from neighbours, the former AGF decided to surrender them to the government.”
The evacuation was carried out discreetly at night to prevent further public alarm. Meanwhile, Kano State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, confirmed that an investigation has been launched.
Mr Idris has been invited for questioning regarding the matter.
Local residents expressed outrage over the presence of wild animals in a densely populated area.
Aminu Balarabe, a community member, described the fear that gripped his neighbourhood: “We were sleeping with one eye open. Even if it’s just a cub, no one jokes with safety.”
Another resident, Hayatuddeen Muhammad, criticised the decision to house such animals in a residential setting.
“That house is surrounded by many others. These animals should have been kept far from people. It’s unfortunate. Though Idris is a good man who helps his neighbours, this was a real danger,” he said.
For some, the revelation came as a complete surprise. Usman Yunusa, who lives further from the scene, said he was unaware of the situation until it made the news.
Mr Ahmed Idris, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, is already a figure of controversy.
In 2022, he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of diverting N109.5 billion in public funds.
As the investigation continues, residents of Kano remain deeply concerned about the safety of their communities and the broader implications of keeping dangerous animals in residential areas.
