I teach GES 201 (Use of English 2) at the University of Ibadan. The first topic of the course is ‘The English Sound System.”
Students must be taught the correct pronunciation of the English consonant and vowel sounds.
There was this class I taught last session, and the first time I met my students I went with a Bluetooth speaker (MP3 player).
I downloaded some videos on consonant and vowel sounds from YouTube and took my tablet with me.
After the usual introduction, I started teaching and when it was time to take the pronunciation section I brought out my teaching aids.
I played the videos for the class, using the Bluetooth speaker to amplify the sound. The students were surprised.
After watching the videos, we had a brief discussion and ended the class.
The following week, I asked the students to write an essay on their first lecture in GES 201 class.
When I read the essays, I was overwhelmed. They all had something to say about the teaching aids I used; they were impressed and expressed their admiration for the tutor.
Throughout that semester, we were pals. They always looked forward to the GES 201 class.
I met one of them recently and he kept thanking me for all I did for them. What did I do? I did my duty as a teacher.
