PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment and immediate recruitment of armed forest guards to secure Nigeria’s 1,129 forests.
The move, announced through his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, forms part of a collaborative security initiative between the federal and state governments aimed at rooting out terrorists and criminal gangs using forests as hideouts.
President Tinubu directed that the forest guards be properly trained and equipped to confront the threats head-on.
He reiterated his administration’s stance that no inch of Nigerian territory would be left in the hands of bandits, terrorists, or criminal elements.
“The forests of Nigeria will be reclaimed and secured,” President Tinubu vowed.
The newly formed forest guard unit will fall under the supervision of the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Federal Ministry of Environment, both of which have been tasked with ensuring the full implementation of the initiative.
Thousands of young Nigerians are expected to be employed in this new security outfit, offering both a strategic response to national security concerns and a boost to employment.
