VIDEO: How Newly-Acquired Warri-Itakpe Train Carriage Caught Fire

Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

The video footage showing a standard gauge train carriage gutted by fire is, afterall, not a doctored video. It’s been confirmed to be true.

The standard gauge train coach is one of the newly-procured ones for Warri-Itakpe railway.

Stonix News gathered that although the video footage found its way into the social media on Tuesday through a staff, the incident actually occurred about three weeks ago.

The trending video, as seen below, showed Nigerian Railway Workers (NRC) staff battling the fire with tugs of leaves, blankets and other ridiculous objects, obviously due to the non-availability of fire extinguishers on board the train coach.

A staff of the corporation told Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday morning that the cause of the fire is still unknown.

“The cause of the fire is still unknown as we speak, but it has finally been put out.

“It is one of the new trains that runs scheduled trips between Warri and Itakpe,” he noted.

The newspaper further quoted the staff as saying most of the coaches do not have fire extinguishers on board.

“Most of the train coaches don’t have fire extinguishers. So, the workers used what was available to them as of the time of the incident and they were able to quench the inferno even though a substantial part of the coach was burnt,” the staff added.

When contacted, the Spokesman of the NRC, Mr. Mahmood Yakub explained that investigation was ongoing to unravel the cause of the fire.

“Our MD will be addressing the media on the cause of the fire before the close of Wednesday, but investigation is ongoing to know what caused the fire on one of the Warri-Itakpe coaches,” the NRC Spokesman told the Nigerian Tribune.

Sources, however, said the NRC management is investigating the source through which the video footage was released to the public with a view to punishing the erring staff.
