Overcoming Hurdles: The Power of Persistence

IN my first term in senior secondary school, I decided to be a very serious student. I made a decision to read my books every day. I made it a duty to read every night before I went to sleep.

I was in Commercial Class as we referred to it then; I avoided the Science Class because I didn’t like the smell of the hospital as a child. At that time, subjects like English, Mathematics, Biology, Economics, and Yoruba were compulsory for all the students in the senior secondary school.

I made the decision to study every day because I wanted to emulate one of my friends. Back then in JSS3, the young girl had shared with us how she read every night. She lived with her grandmother and had no one to encourage her to read but she chose to do the right thing; I admired her.

In SS1 first term, I was faithful to my decision. I read almost every day. However, most of the time, I would pick only one subject to read and that was Biology. It was either Biology or nothing. Even when I had read everything in my Biology notes, I would read it again. I hardly read other subjects.

At the end of the term, my love for Biology was rewarded; I had the highest mark in Biology in my class. I had an A in Biology, despite my lack of interest in science subjects.

A determined heart can overcome the highest hurdle.

As we step into a new season. Let nothing stop you. Go for your goal; you have the capacity to achieve it. Be determined to overcome the hurdles that stand between you and your goal. Shine! Shine! Shine!

Compliments of the season.
