76 Dead, Dozens Missing As Migrant Boat Sinks Off Yemen

NO fewer than 76 people lost their lives and dozens remain missing after a boat carrying mostly Ethiopian migrants sank off the coast of Yemen, officials confirmed on Monday, August 4.

Yemeni security authorities reported that 76 bodies had been recovered and 32 people rescued following the shipwreck in the Gulf of Aden.

The vessel was carrying 157 people, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The tragedy occurred off the coast of Abyan governorate in southern Yemen, a common transit point for African migrants attempting to reach wealthier Gulf countries via the perilous sea route.

Some survivors have been transferred to the city of Aden, near Abyan, a security source said. Earlier, the IOM had placed the death toll at 68.
