Why Davido Chose Akwa Ibom as His First Concert Stop in Nigeria

Rita Enemuru, Reporting

AFROBEATS superstar Davido has opened up about why Akwa Ibom State was chosen as the first Nigerian stop for his much-anticipated homecoming concert — and his reasons go far beyond music.

Speaking at a pre-concert reception in Uyo, hosted by Governor Umo Eno and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the award-winning artiste said Akwa Ibom stood out among all the options his team considered across Africa. According to him, when they began scouting locations for the Nigerian leg of his “5ive Tour,” five destinations made the shortlist, but Akwa Ibom came first because of its world-class infrastructure, peaceful atmosphere, and the warmth of its people.

Why Davido Chose Akwa Ibom as His First Concert Stop in Nigeria

Davido described everything about the state as “beautiful,” highlighting the serene environment and impressive facilities. He said the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium — which can hold about 30,000 people — matched the standards required for international-level performances. In fact, the concert made history as Davido became the first artiste to completely sell out the stadium. For him, it wasn’t just a performance; it was a statement that Nigeria can host world-class shows when the right environment and support systems are in place.

Reflecting on his experience, Davido said, “When we were looking around Africa, five places came up, and Akwa Ibom was at the top of the list. A lot of people are flying in from other states that don’t have this kind of facility. You have a standard stadium, and that’s why we are starting here. As time goes on, we’ll do the other states, but for now, let’s shut it down.”

He also praised Governor Umo Eno’s leadership, commending his administration’s emphasis on peace, security, and youth empowerment. According to Davido, the governor’s commitment to creating a safe and enabling environment has allowed young people to express their creativity and thrive. “The peace and development here are encouraging. It shows that when a government supports its youths, the results speak for themselves,” he said.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who was also at the event, lauded both Davido and Governor Eno. He described the governor as youth- and sports-friendly, and applauded Davido for being a strong influence on young Nigerians. Akpabio urged him to use his global platform to promote emerging artistes from Akwa Ibom and other parts of the country.

Governor Eno, in turn, expressed his gratitude to Davido for bringing such a major event to the state. He noted that the concert would not only boost tourism and business in Uyo but also inspire local talents to dream bigger. “We want to thank you for being an inspiration to the younger generation. You have shown that consistency and hard work can take one to great heights,” the governor said.

For Davido, the Akwa Ibom concert marks more than a tour stop — it is a celebration of homecoming, unity, and progress. As he prepares to take his “5ive Tour” to other parts of Nigeria, his message is clear: world-class music deserves world-class venues, and Akwa Ibom has just set the bar.
