IN a historic tribute to one of Africa’s most influential musical icons, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded the posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award conferred upon the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
This monumental recognition, bestowed by the Recording Academy of America, marks the first time an African artist has received such an honour, solidifying Fela’s everlasting impact on global music.
In a statement released from the Statehouse, President Tinubu highlighted Fela Kuti not only as a musical pioneer but also as a courageous voice of resistance and freedom.
“Fela was more than a musician. He was a fearless voice of the people, a philosopher of freedom, and a revolutionary force whose music confronted injustice and reshaped global sound,” said the president.
Fela’s powerful sound, blending traditional African rhythms with jazz, funk, and highlife, became the heartbeat of Afrobeat.
His music provided an unfiltered critique of political corruption, societal inequality, and oppression, resonating with millions globally.
Through his bold lyrics and unapologetic performances, Fela defined a new genre and inspired generations of artists, both in Nigeria and across the globe.
“His courage, creativity, and conviction defined a generation and continue to inspire the world,” President Tinubu stated. “In Yoruba mythology, he has transcended to a higher plane as an Orisa. He is now eternal.”
The posthumous award acknowledges Fela’s unparalleled contribution to the evolution of modern music and his pivotal role in shaping the sound of Africa.
His influence can still be heard today in the rise of Afrobeats, a genre that has taken the world by storm, and in the works of contemporary Nigerian artists who carry his torch forward.
