A stabbing attack at a Macy’s department store in Philadelphia on Monday morning saw the death of one security guard and left another injured.
At about 10:45 a.m., a man reportedly tried to steal hats from Macy’s in Center City. Security guards stopped the man, and after a confrontation, a security officer won the challenge, retrieved the stolen merchandise and allowed the male to go on.
15 minutes after the confrontation, the suspect returned to the store and attacked two security guards with a knife.
One of the security officers, 30, was stabbed in the neck and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The other, a 23-year-old man, was stabbed in the face and arm; he was hospitalized and is in stable condition.
The suspect fled the scene after the attack but was apprehended few hours later.
The store has been temporarily closed by authorities.
“We are heartbroken about the incident that took place today at Macy’s Center City.
“Ensuring the safety and well-being of our customers and colleagues is always our top priority,” a Macy’s spokesperson told newsmen.
