ABIA State has won a prize of 500,000 dollars, equivalent to about N750 million, after emerging the South-East champion in the 2025 Primary Health Leadership Competition and ranking among the top six performing states nationwide.
The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during the weekly post-Executive Council press briefing held at the Government House in Umuahia.
Prince Kanu attributed the achievement to the wide-ranging reforms being implemented by Governor Alex Otti in the health sector, noting that the initiatives have continued to yield positive results.
He explained that Abia’s emergence as a leading state in the highly competitive challenge underscores the effectiveness of the ongoing transformation of the state’s primary healthcare system.
According to him, the competition was instituted by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, UNICEF, the Aliko Dangote Foundation and other partners to periodically assess and benchmark states’ performance using key primary healthcare indicators aligned with national health sector renewal initiatives.
“The massive reforms being embarked upon by the Abia State Government in the health sector have continued to produce very positive outcomes,” the commissioner said.
“Recently, Abia State emerged as the 2025 Primary Health Leadership Challenge champion in the South-East and ranked among the top six performing states in the country.
The prize money won by the state is 500,000 dollars, which is about N750 million.”
Prince Kanu further explained that the exercise is a peer review mechanism through which governors assess their respective performances in the delivery of primary healthcare services and the overall health sector.
He described the award as further validation of Governor Otti’s commitment to transforming healthcare delivery in Abia State.
