THE Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of four of its staff members in Tuesday’s fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos.
According to a statement from the management, the inferno engulfed the building before emergency responders could fully intervene, despite swift mobilisation by FIRS security and safety officials.

The service occupies the sixth and seventh floors of Afriland Towers, housing the Medium Tax Audit and Onikan Emerging Tax Offices. It was on these floors that the lives of the dedicated officers were lost.
“The management and staff of FIRS are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of four of our colleagues in the fire incident. We honour their memory and recognise their professionalism and dedication,” the statement read.
FIRS extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them of continuous support during this painful period.
In response to the tragedy, the tax authority disclosed that it is reviewing and strengthening safety measures across all its offices nationwide—both rented and owned—to safeguard its workforce.
“Our people remain paramount, and we are committed to ensuring their safety in every workplace,” the statement added.
