No fewer than 24 persons are believed killed and huge sums of money carted away as daredevil armed robbers, on Thursday, invaded commercial banks at Uromi, headquarters of Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Among the brutally killed were some policemen as the Edo State Police Command’s spokesman, Kontongs Bello, confirmed the robbery attacks, but shied away from details.
The suspected armed robbers were also believed to have carted away unspecified huge sums of money from the affected banks.
The banks so affected by the activities of the suspected armed robbers are believed to include Zenith Bank, First Bank, Unity Bank and the United Bank for Africa (UBA).
A resident of the sprawling community, the home town of the late Chairman of PPD Board of Trustees, BOT, Chief Tiny Anenih, said that the attacks on the banks were perfectly coordinated.
The source described the attacks as “too coordinated in commando style and the armed robbers launched the attacks simultaneously. This is novel in this town.
“The sporadic shots by the armed robbers caused panic in the town. The robbers came prepared. People were just running helter-skelter.”
A senior security officer, who pleaded anonymity, said the total casualties were no fewer than 24 persons who were caught in the orgy of gunfire.
