Atiku Pledges to Step Aside For Obi If Former Running Mate Wins ADC Ticket

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

IN a move that has doused long-held tension over what many have described as a gadfly stance in his political career, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has finally agreed to offer his full support to Peter Obi should the ex-Anambra State governor emerge as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Atiku indicated his willingness to step aside for Obi during an interview on Arise News on Wednesday evening. When asked directly whether he would step aside if Obi won the ADC presidential primary, he replied in the affirmative.

Atiku and Peter Obi are widely regarded as the front runners for the ADC’s presidential ticket.

Others, including Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi, are also believed to be strong contenders for the party’s nomination.

Asked if he would step down for Obi should the former Labour Party presidential candidate secure the ADC ticket, Atiku responded: “Yes, I will step aside for any winner.”

Pressed on whether Peter Obi was included in “any winner”, Atiku said: “Of course, if he is a contender, why not?”

When further asked if it would not be difficult for him to do so, given that Obi served as his vice-presidential running mate in the 2023 election, Atiku dismissed the suggestion.

“What is difficult there? It is democracy. It is either you go through consensus or you go through election. You emerge through consensus or emerge through the electoral process,” he said.
