Diary of a Teacher (DoT) with Titilope Ogundele

‘Aunty, You Like Money Too Much!’

THERE was this private school where I taught Phonics a few years back. The school had two branches and I was employed to teach at one of the branches, the new branch.

The amount the school offered to pay was meager, but the proprietress promised to increase the pay the following term.

When a new term began, I reminded the proprietress that she promised to increase my pay; she came up with some excuses why she could not raise the pay.

I was tempted to terminate my service with the school, but I stayed. Being in the classroom with those children brought a special kind of joy.

Some months later, I had a rough experience with the proprietress of the school. It was the end of the term and I was told that my salary had been paid; then, I had some issues with my bank; I wasn’t receiving bank alerts.

I needed the money urgently so I went to the ATM to check the money that was supposedly paid. There was no money in my account. I called to inform the woman that I did not receive the money she claimed to have sent.

Based on her claim, I needed to go check my account balance again, but the money was not there still.

Well, it was my money and I worked for it; so, I called back to inform her that the money was not in my account. And what? The woman started shouting at me on the phone and the next thing was, ‘Aunty, you like money too much!’ Saying I was pained would be an understatement; I was overwhelmed!

Money

The following term, two months into the term, I got no payment and I laid no complaint. In the third month, the headmistress asked me to come and sign for my payment and it was then I told her I had not been paid for two months. It was difficult for her to believe me, but she contacted the proprietress and they checked their record. They realised that I was right.

The proprietress called me and she was like, ‘Ah, Aunty! And you did not talk.’ I had no response for her, but within me, I knew I didn’t want her to hurt me, again.

I just thought to myself, ‘Now, we know who likes money more.’
