Some men, suspected to be members of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue (DBIR) Service Task Force on revenue leakages, on Thursday, beat up a married woman, Mrs. Hassiya Muhammadu, and her sister, Mrs. Nora Adamu for alleged refusal to produce her driver licence on demand.
The incident occurred at the Warri-Sapele road within the Third Marine Gate junction, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Human Rights groups have called for the prosecution of the alleged suspects who assaulted the two married women and inflicted several injuries on them as well as plucking away the car number plate.
Witnesses said Mrs Muhammadu was assaulted because she could not produce her driver’s licence on demand by the taskforce.
The taskforce was said to be on a stop-and-search duty and had demanded to see the vehicle’s particulars but was unable to produce her driver’s licence.
Thereafter, she was advised to offer a bride to the taskforce led to the forceful removal of her number plate.
Speaking on the assault, Mrs Muhammadu corroborated her alleged refusal to give a bribe to members of the taskforce which led to her bring beaten up.
“I was going for a medical emergency and I pleaded with them to let me go because I was sick.
“But they refused and asked me to leave my car and they proceeded to lose out my number plate.
“I still pleaded with them that I have my driver’s license, they refused and they dragged and punched me, my sister was also beaten alongside me,” she narrated.
Stonix News (SN) gathered that the victims had to be taken to a clinic for medical attention after sustaining several bruises and wounds.
Meanwhile, the coordinator of the taskforce, Mr. Malachi Monye, while speaking to journalists, said he had not been briefed, but promised to address the matter with despatch.
