Edo 2024: APC, LP Governorship Candidates Emerge

Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

AHEAD of the September 2023 governorship election in Edo State, the governorship candidates of the Labour Party (LP) and there All Progressives Congress (APC) have emerged.

While the immediate past national chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata, emerged as the LP governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo was declared as the governorship candidate of APC.

Senator Okpebholo, during the rescheduled direct primary held on Friday, polled 12,433 votes to emerge winner of the Party primaries.

The Deputy Governor of Abia, Ikechukwu Emetu, on the other hand, declared Akpata winner of the LP primary having scored the highest number of votes.

Emetu said Akpata scored 316 votes to defeat his co-contestants in a landslide victory – a declaration that sent the crowd into wild jubilation at the venue of the primary.

His APC counterpart, Senator Okpebholo, was declared winner by the governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, who was the Chairman, Election Committee and Chief Returning Officer.

Reacting to the declaration, Edo State Chairman of APC, Jarret Tenebe, described the process that led to the emergence of Okpebholo as thorough and flawless.

Meanwhile, while the party agent of Senator Okpebholo hailed the process, one of the governorship aspirants, Anamero Dekeri, denounced and rejected the result.

Recall that APC had earlier carried out its primary under the leadership of Governor Hope Uzodinma, in which Senator Idahosa was thrown up, as well as three other factional candidates before the party leadership ousted Uzodinma and called for a rerun.
