ENOUGH OF FIREWOOD! Dangote To Slash Cooking Gas Price For Nigerians

PRESIDENT of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has announced plans to slash the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, for Nigerians.

He warned that if the current distributors resist the move, he will bypass them and directly sell to consumers.

However, the announcement has sparked criticisms from industry operators, who accuse Dangote of attempting to monopolise the LPG market.

During a recent tour of the Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, Dangote told guests, including members of the Lagos Business School CGEO Africa, that cooking gas prices remain unaffordable for many Nigerians.

He expressed concern over the widespread use of firewood and kerosene by most Nigerians, despite the country’s growing capacity to produce LPG.

“We currently produce about 2,000 tonnes of LPG daily. The price is high, but we’re working to bring it down and make it affordable.

“If distributors resist this, we’ll go directly to consumers to ensure more people switch from firewood and kerosene to LPG,” Dangote said.

The refinery, according to him, now produces up to 22,000 tonnes of LPG daily and is ramping up supply to the domestic market.

The plan aligns with Dangote’s broader strategy to begin direct distribution of petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel, across the country by August.

As part of the initiative, 4,000 CNG-powered buses have reportedly been acquired.
