FRSC Confirms Two Dead, Nine Injured In Multiple Crash On Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway


THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that two people have died in a multiple crash involving 11 vehicles along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway on Wednesday.

Sector Commander of the FRSC in Enugu State, Mr Franklin Agbakoba, disclosed this to journalists in Enugu shortly after rescue operations carried out by officers of the Corps.

Agbakoba said nine men sustained varying degrees of injury in the crash, which involved a total of 30 occupants — 26 males and four females.

The multiple accident

He explained that the incident occurred at about 11:45 a.m. on the Port Harcourt-bound section of the expressway, near the New Garki axis in Enugu State.

According to him, the crash involved four trucks, two trailers, a Toyota Sienna, a tipper, a Toyota Hiace bus, a mini-bus, and a Jeep.

He noted that officers from the FRSC Ozalla Unit Command responded within 10 minutes of the incident and immediately commenced rescue operations.

“They were later joined by personnel from nearby FRSC units and other security agencies,” he added.

Agbakoba stated that the injured victims were taken to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, and the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ozalla, by the FRSC Zebra 32 Ambulance team stationed along the expressway.

He also confirmed that the road obstructions were cleared with the support of tow truck teams from both the FRSC and the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA).

“The FRSC Unit Commander, Ozalla; the Divisional Police Officer, Ozalla; and military personnel supervised the rescue operations,” he said.

The sector commander identified speeding, route violation, and loss of control as the primary causes of the crash.
