Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has pledged to establish an institution of higher learning in Opobo Town to foster sustainable academic and economic development in the region.

The Governor also promised to reclaim land to create more space for critical infrastructure, improve livelihoods, and foster an environment conducive to robust employment opportunities.
Governor Fubara made these commitments in Opobo Town during the inauguration of the 7km-long Opobo Town Ring Road, featuring three bridges, in the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area on Monday.

The road is set to significantly enhance connectivity and accessibility within Opobo Town and its surrounding communities.

Highlighting the importance of these initiatives, the Governor expressed confidence that they would elevate Opobo Town’s status among other local government areas.
He remarked, “We plan to bring a higher institution here and undertake more land reclamation to address our land challenges. Additionally, we aim to empower our people to be self-reliant and create a favourable environment for employment opportunities, ensuring Opobo grows.”

Governor Fubara noted that the Opobo Ring Road project, flagged off on 28 May 2023 by the previous administration, was redesigned and executed under his leadership to meet a celebrated standard.
He commended the support from the local community and urged continued cooperation, assuring that the government remains steadfast in its developmental commitments.

The Governor said, “This project reflects our vision and the support of our people. I am proud to inaugurate it myself, as it symbolises our collective progress.”
Governor Fubara also called for continued peace among political leaders, traditional rulers, and the community. “Opobo/Nkoro remains one of the most peaceful LGAs. Let us maintain this harmony, which fosters development,” he appealed.
Performing the inauguration, Zamfara State Governor, Dr Dauda Lawal, praised Governor Fubara’s visionary leadership, noting that infrastructure projects like the Ring Road enhance socio-economic growth, improve well-being, and attract investments.
Dr Lawal stated, “This project demonstrates Governor Fubara’s commitment to infrastructure development, which enhances connectivity, boosts trade, and fosters pride among Opobo residents.”

The Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Barrister Elloka Tasie-Amadi, described the challenges overcome during the project due to the terrain, highlighting the technical specifications and extensive use of imported materials for construction.
Tasie-Amadi explained, “The 7km road includes three bridges, 4km of drains, and extensive filling with imported materials to heights of up to 10 metres in certain areas.”
In his remarks, Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Chairman, Hon Enyiada Cookey-Gam, called the inauguration a historic moment, emphasising the community’s resolve to protect the project for long-term benefits.

Hadi Chehade, Managing Director of Lubrik Construction Company, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to execute the transformative project and contribute to Governor Fubara’s development agenda for Rivers State.
