BARELY 48 hours to Saturday presidential and National Assembly elections, gunmen have killed and set ablaze the Labour Party (LP) candidate for Enugu East Senatorial district, Oyibo Chukwu.
The gunmen also killed and burnt five supporters who were with him in his car.
The incident happened at Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area late Wednesday evening.
Oyibo, a lawyer, was reportedly attacked while returning from a campaign trip in Agbani area.
After they were shot in the car, the gunmen set the vehicle and the occupants on fire.
A top member of the party has confirmed it, but said he should not be quoted until the family speaks.
The governorship candidate of the LP, Chijioke Edeoga, who also confirmed the unfortunate incident, said that the gunmen shot the victim inside his vehicle with five others with him and set the car ablaze.
“Our party members are being targeted for assassination by political parties that felt threatened by the rise of the Labour Party in the state and are afraid they may lose the Saturday’s election,” he was quoted as saying.
