SAPELE – Hon. Bright Abeke, the abducted chairman of Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, has regained his freedom, ending an 11-day ordeal at the hands of unknown gunmen.
A viral photograph circulating on Monday night shows the visibly relieved council boss flanked by Olorogun Jaro Egbo, chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area, confirming his release.
Details surrounding his escape or rescue remain sketchy at this hour.
Abeke was seized on April 10 from a hotel along Owumi Road in Sapele. Armed men invaded the premises, firing sporadically, and injuring a local vigilante as well as the chairman’s security detail before whisking him away.
The release comes just hours after hundreds of local government employees took to the streets of Sapele on Monday, protesting the perceived slow pace of the rescue operation.
Demonstrators had called on the State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, and other security agencies to expedite action.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, had yet to respond to requests for confirmation at the time of this report.
However, security agencies led by the Delta State Police Command have been on the captors’ trail since the incident occurred on April 10.
Further details are expected as the police issue an official statement.
