PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emerged as the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress for the 2027 general election after recording a landslide victory in the party’s primary election held in Abuja.
The primary, which took place at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, saw Tinubu secure 10,999,162 votes to defeat his only challenger, Mr Stanley Osifu, who polled 16,503 votes.
The result was announced on Saturday by Senator Pius Anyim, chairman of the APC Presidential Primary Election Committee and returning officer for the exercise.
According to Anyim, the nationwide primary covered the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory, 774 local government areas and 8,809 wards.
He disclosed that 12,643,306 party members were registered for the exercise, while 11,069,756 members were accredited to vote. Out of the accredited voters, 11,015,665 votes were cast.
A breakdown of the results showed that Tinubu won almost all valid votes cast, defeating Osifu by a margin of 10,982,659 votes.
Declaring the result, Anyim said: “By the powers conferred on me as the returning officer of this primary election, I hereby declare President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the APC presidential primary election and the duly elected presidential candidate of the party.”
The declaration sparked jubilation at the venue as governors, party leaders, members of the National Working Committee, lawmakers and supporters applauded the outcome.
The victory is seen as a major consolidation of Tinubu’s influence within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with APC leaders describing the exercise as a reflection of party unity and nationwide support for the incumbent president.
