‘I Was Blind for Two Years’ – Tears, Jubilation As NNPC/Seplat JV Gives Free Sight Surgery In Owerri

IT was a harvest of testimonies in Imo State on Wednesday as the NNPC/Seplat Joint Venture’s ‘Eye Can See’ programme restored sight to hundreds of cataract patients – completely free of charge.

The 2026 edition of the corporate social investment initiative drew emotional scenes at the venue in Owerri, where elderly men and women wept for joy after undergoing successful surgeries.

Many beneficiaries had lived for years with blurred or lost vision. Yesterday, they saw again.

Lolo Njemanze, who had been unable to see with her right eye for two years, could not hide her gratitude.

“For the past two years I have not been using my right eye to see, but yesterday, I underwent surgery and everything went fine,” she said. “I thank the JV Partners and I pray that God will continue to bless them.”

Dr Nnamdi, another beneficiary, described the experience as beyond his wildest dreams.

“It was a wonderful experience. I never expected this. It went beyond my imagination, highly successful. I trust God that my sight will be wonderful. God will bless them,” he said.

Chief Onyeneke, a respected community leader, praised the medical team for their professionalism and compassion.

“The doctors were wonderful. I am so happy with the medical team,” he said. “To the organisers, they have tried. They are watching out for the poor masses, the young and the old.”

The ‘Eye Can See’ programme is part of Seplat Energy’s broader commitment to delivering affordable, reliable and sustainable energy that drives social and economic prosperity. The company is Nigeria’s leading indigenous energy firm, listed on the Nigerian Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.

As beneficiaries lined up for final checks, many said the initiative had given them not just sight, but a second chance at life.
