A three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Jikwoyi Phase 1 area of the Federal Capital Territory on the morning of 3rd April 2026, prompting a major rescue operation involving multiple emergency agencies.

The FCT Police Command received a distress call at approximately 9:00 AM and immediately mobilised a response team led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD, fcai, alongside the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations. Officers swiftly cordoned off the scene as a coordinated rescue effort got underway.
They were later joined by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross, the Federal Fire Service, officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, and representatives of CGC Construction Company.

According to preliminary investigations, seventeen workers were present on site at the time of the collapse. Eight victims have been pulled from the rubble and rushed to the Sisters of the Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi, where they are receiving urgent medical care. Nine others escaped from the site unhurt.
Rescue operations remain ongoing as emergency teams continue to search for any individuals who may still be trapped beneath the debris.
CP Sanusi has ordered a full-scale investigation in collaboration with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to determine the cause of the collapse. In a firm statement, he confirmed that all individuals and authorities responsible for the approval, issuance, and inspection of the construction site would be invited for questioning as part of efforts to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies.
