FORMER Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Ogun East Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections after obtaining his nomination and expression of interest forms under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Daniel announced the development on Wednesday, saying his decision was motivated by a desire to provide effective and responsive representation for the people of Ogun East Senatorial District.
“Today, I picked up my nomination and expression of interest forms as I seek to return to the Nigerian Senate, continuing my efforts to provide effective and responsive representation for the people of Ogun East Senatorial District under the platform of the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he stated.
The former governor remains one of the most prominent political figures in Ogun State, having served as governor from 2003 to 2011 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During his administration, Daniel was recognised for several infrastructure and development initiatives aimed at repositioning Ogun State economically and socially. His government established the Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun, regarded as Nigeria’s first specialised university of education, expanding access to tertiary education in the state.
His tenure also saw investments in road construction and rehabilitation across major towns and communities, including projects designed to improve connectivity between rural and urban areas. Urban renewal programmes were introduced in parts of Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode and other locations to enhance public infrastructure and environmental management.
Daniel’s administration promoted industrialisation by encouraging investors to take advantage of Ogun State’s strategic proximity to Lagos. Several industrial clusters and business-friendly initiatives emerged during his years in office, contributing to the state’s growing reputation as a manufacturing hub.
In sports development, his government upgraded facilities such as the Gateway International Stadium in Sagamu, which later served as one of the venues for the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted by Nigeria.
He was also known for youth empowerment initiatives and support for vocational training programmes intended to create employment opportunities and build entrepreneurship among young people.
Political observers believe Daniel’s declaration could influence political dynamics within Ogun State as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum.
His entry into the race is expected to spark consultations and alignments within the APC as party members position themselves for the forthcoming primaries.
