Effurun Homicide: Nigeria Police Dismiss ASP, Three Other Senior Officers

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

ABUJA – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and three other senior officers following their involvement in the extra-judicial killing of one Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu announced the decision on Wednesday during a press briefing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He confirmed that the dismissal followed the recommendations of the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which thoroughly deliberated on the matter after it was formally reported to his office.

The IGP did not mince his words, describing the actions of the convicted officers as criminal, unprofessional, and wholly unacceptable within a modern police force.

“Such conduct has no place in the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.

According to the IGP, upon receiving the report of the killing, he immediately ordered the transfer of all involved officers from the Delta State Command to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

They were subsequently compelled to face the full weight of the agency’s internal disciplinary machinery without delay.

The IGP further revealed that the Force Disciplinary Committee was already in session when the investigation commenced.

He directed that ASP Nuhu Usman and the other senior officers answer directly to the FDC.

The committee has since recommended not only the immediate dismissal of the officers but also their criminal prosecution for unlawful homicide.

“No criminal suspicion against any citizen by a police officer justifies extra-judicial killing,” the IGP stated emphatically.

He added that he has already forwarded the recommendation for the dismissal’s ratification to the Police Service Commission.

Extending the deepest condolences of the Nigeria Police Force to the grieving family of Mene Ogidi, the IGP acknowledged that no statement can ever fill the void left by a lost life.

He appealed to residents of Delta State and the nation at large to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that the authorities have taken full control of the matter and will ensure justice is served swiftly and transparently.
