LAGOS – Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has publicly endorsed his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries.
The announcement, made on Monday, marks a significant departure from the political tradition long observed in the state’s ruling party.
Dr Hamzat has, over the past few weeks, been undertaking consultations with key stakeholders across the party hierarchy in Lagos, including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa, and members of the influential Governance Advisory Council (GAC).
Historically, the endorsement of a governorship candidate in Lagos APC has been reserved for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, now President of the Federal Republic, following a period of wider consultation among party elders. Party leaders and stalwarts have typically awaited Mr Tinubu’s public pronouncement before rallying behind a single aspirant.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s early public backing of his deputy therefore breaks sharply with that established custom, signalling a potential shift in the state’s political dynamics.
More details to follow.
