THE remains of two military personnel abducted and killed while travelling to their traditional wedding in Imo State have finally been recovered, nearly four years after they were snatched from what should have been the happiest day of their lives.
Master Warrant Officer (rtd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew were headed to Gloria’s hometown in Imo State in late April 2022. The journey was meant to mark the formal introduction of their families — a celebration of love across regions and backgrounds.

The slain couple
Linus, a retired senior non-commissioned officer, had already given years of service to Nigeria. Gloria was still in active service, known among colleagues for her discipline and quiet strength. Friends say theirs was a bond built on more than affection. They made long distance work — Gloria based in Sokoto, Linus in Makurdi — because they saw a future together.
That future ended along the Ubaha–Orsu axis. Suspected IPOB/ESN militants abducted the couple. Their deaths were brutal. For colleagues in uniform, and for Nigerians who saw in them an ordinary couple chasing an ordinary dream, the loss cut deep.

The exhumed remains
But the military did not forget. Troops of 82 Division, working with other security agencies, carried out a clearance and search operation on 24 April 2026 in the same area where the couple vanished.
It was no quiet recovery. As soldiers advanced, they came under heavy fire. Militants laid an ambush, then regrouped for another assault. The troops fought through, forcing the attackers to retreat, and pressed on with the search.

Shallow graves were discovered. Remains suspected to be those of Linus and Gloria were carefully excavated and recovered for forensic examination. Military sources say efforts are now under way to contact the families for DNA verification before final burial rites.

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the couple will receive full military honours — a final salute to their service, their sacrifice, and the wedding that never was.
