AWKUZU, ANAMBRA — Police in Anambra State have arrested two men after the bodies of three relatives — including a 14-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl — were discovered in a shallow grave, in a case that has been linked to a bitter dispute over a bitter kola tree and inherited land.
The victims, all from the same family, have been identified as Robert Nnakezie, 67; Ikechukwu Obi, 14; and Ukamaka Efione, aged just two, who was reportedly visiting the area during the school holidays.
Acting on a tip-off concerning the trio’s sudden disappearance, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) from Awkuzu launched a painstaking investigation.
On the afternoon of 3 May 2026, police arrested Emmanuel Nnabueze Nnakezie, 33, and Clement Nnaekezie, 69, at separate locations in Oba and Ukpor respectively.
According to impeccable inside sources, both suspects later confessed during interrogation and led officers to a shallow grave in Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area, where the victims’ remains were recovered.
The bodies have since been exhumed and deposited in a mortuary pending autopsy.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, said preliminary investigations suggest the killings stemmed from a dispute over ownership of a bitter kola tree and other inherited parcels of land.
The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has strongly condemned the act, describing it as “barbaric and unacceptable”.
He assured the public that the command remains fully committed to ensuring justice is served.
