NEW DELHI: Jagdeep Dhankhar has stepped down as Vice President of India with immediate effect, citing health reasons and the need to follow medical advice.
His resignation, addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, was tendered in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.
In a letter marked by gratitude and reflection, Dhankhar expressed his thanks to President Murmu for her “unwavering support” and described their working relationship as “soothing” and positive.
He also extended heartfelt appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers, saying their cooperation had been “invaluable” and a source of personal growth.
“The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament will ever be cherished and embedded in my memory,” Dhankhar wrote.
Reflecting on his time in office, Dhankhar expressed pride in India’s rapid economic development and global stature, calling it a “transformative era” in the nation’s history.
“It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development,” he added. “Serving in this transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honour.”
Concluding his letter, the outgoing Vice President shared his enduring confidence in India’s future, calling the country’s rise “phenomenal” and expressing pride in its place on the global stage.
Dhankhar, who has served as Vice President since August 2022, also held the constitutional role of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s Parliament.
His departure comes at a time when India’s political landscape remains active ahead of key legislative sessions.
