THE International Press Centre (IPC) Lagos, is set to commence a two-day media workshop for upcoming and full-fledged journalists in the South-South and South-East region of Nigeria.
This was contained in the application/invitation letter sent to interested and selected persons and made available to Stonix News on Monday.
The workshop commences today Wednesday, February 21 and ends on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at the Golden Tulip Hotel, 31 Stadium Road, Rumuomasi, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to the letter, the objective of the training is to “strengthen the media for fair, accurate, ethical and inclusive reporting, and to combat information disorder/fake news in democratic governance reporting using fact-checking and FOI tools.”
“The workshop is being held as part of the activities under Component 4 (Support to Media) of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EUSDGN II) project, of which IPC is the lead implementing partner,” IPC Project Manager, Sanmi Fatobi, noted in the letter.
He said the workshop was expected to host 40 journalists, including freelancers, community journalists, new or mid-level journalists, and others.
Part of the letter read thus: “This workshop is one of the activities being implemented by IPC, as lead partner, and the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO) under Component 4 (Support to media) of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EUSDGN II) project.
“The overall objective is to strengthen the media for fair, accurate, ethical and inclusive reporting of the electoral processes and elections and particularly seeks to combat information disorder/fake news in democratic governance reporting using fact-checking and FOI tools.
“The workshop is expected to attract forty (40) journalists selected from the South-South/South-East region who are either, new/mid-level journalists, community journalists, freelance journalists, etc.
“The workshop is to introduce participants to fact-checking and FOI tools /techniques and the application of such to mitigate misinformation and disinformation as it relates to democratic governance reporting.
“The event is scheduled to be held as follows:
Date: Wednesday, February 21 & Thursday, February 22, 2024, at GOLDEN TULIP Hotel, 31 Stadium Road, Rumuomasi, Port Harcourt, Rivers State by 9.30am each day.”
