Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

THE Akran of Badagry Kingdom, His Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has passed on, throwing the ancient coastal town into mourning.

Details surrounding the circumstances of his death were yet to be made public as of the time of filing this report.

However, sources within the kingdom confirmed that Badagry has been gripped by solemnity following the demise of the revered monarch.

In line with age-long tradition, markets across Badagry have reportedly been ordered to shut, while preparations are underway for the Oro masquerade to make a public appearance, signalling the passing of a paramount ruler.

Oba Menu-Toyi I was one of Nigeria’s most prominent and widely respected traditional rulers. Before ascending the throne in 1977, he distinguished himself as both a politician and a journalist, carving a notable place for himself in Nigeria’s pre- and post-independence history.

He was among the longest-serving monarchs in Lagos State, having reigned for 48 years.

A member of the defunct Action Group, the late Akran represented Badagry in the Parliament in 1951 and later served as a minister during the pre-Independence era, contributing significantly to the political evolution of the country.

Beyond politics, his legacy in education remains enduring.

He was instrumental in the establishment of Badagry Grammar School, the flagship secondary school in the area, which has produced generations of distinguished Nigerians.

According to information published by Wikipedia, the monarch was born in 1899, placing his age at 125 at the time of his death.

For decades, Oba Menu-Toyi I stood as the paramount ruler of the Badagry Kingdom and a respected voice within the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, where his wisdom and experience commanded admiration.

As Badagry prepares for the final rites of passage, tributes are expected to pour in from across Lagos State and beyond, celebrating the life and legacy of a monarch whose reign bridged tradition, politics and modern statecraft.
