IN a decisive move to address decades-long traffic congestion in Ughelli, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Monday flagged off the construction of the N39.3 billion Otovwodo Flyover, describing it as a lasting solution to one of the city’s most notorious bottlenecks.
The governor, who spoke during the ground-breaking ceremony, said the project aligns with his administration’s infrastructure-driven development strategy, focused on quality execution, fiscal discipline and opening up critical economic corridors across the state.
He observed that Ughelli’s growing population and expanding commercial activities had overstretched existing road infrastructure, with Otovwodo Junction on the East–West Road becoming a daily nightmare for commuters and motorists.
“Anyone who has passed through this junction understands the scale of the problem. I have experienced it myself,” Oborevwori said, stressing that the flyover would finally bring relief to residents and travellers.
As part of interim traffic management efforts, the governor revealed that the state government had earlier constructed alternative internal roads linking Agbarha-Otor Road, including Uduere, Okogbe, Oru, Edo Streets and Royal Avenue, at a cost approaching N6 billion.
The flyover, awarded to construction giant Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, is scheduled for completion within 12 months.
Oborevwori emphasised that the deadline was sacrosanct, given the economic and strategic importance of the junction.
He explained that the project comprises a multi-span reinforced concrete structure with dual carriageways, roundabouts and extensive roadworks, designed to decongest traffic, enhance safety and stimulate commercial growth in Ughelli.
Beyond traffic relief, the governor noted that the project would create thousands of jobs across the construction value chain, while urging residents to cooperate with traffic authorities throughout the construction phase.
In his remarks, Julius Berger’s Managing Director, Engr. Peer Lubasch, described the project as a testament to the enduring partnership between the company and Delta State, assuring that the 15-span flyover would be delivered to global standards, complete with advanced drainage and solar-powered street lighting.
Following the ceremony, Oborevwori paid courtesy visits to the Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom, HRM Wilson Ojakovo Oharisi III, and Chief Morrison Olori, reaffirming his commitment to equitable development across Delta State.
Community leaders and residents at the event praised the governor for what they described as a bold and long-awaited intervention to end Ughelli’s traffic challenges.
