JUST IN: Court Dismisses LP’s, PDP’s Appeals Against Sanwo-Olu

Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

THE Court of Appeal, on Wednesday in Lagos, dismissed the appeals of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) against the victory of Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat as the Governor and Deputy Governor of Lagos State in the 2023 March governorship election.

Stonix News had reported that in March, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Sanwo-Olu as the winner of the Lagos governorship election.

Sanwo-Olu had polled 762,134 votes to defeat his close challenger, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of LP, who scored 312,329 votes and Abdulazeez Adediran, governorship candidate of PDP, who came a distant third with 62,449 votes.

Not satisfied, the LP and PDP candidates had approached the Lagos State Election Petitions Tribunal to nullify Sanwo-Olu’s victory.

In its ruling on September 25, the tribunal had dismissed Adediran and Rhodes-Vivour’s suit seeking to nullify the victory of Sanwo-Olu at the poll.

Not pleased with the verdict, on October 13, Jandor filed 34 grounds of appeal challenging the judgment of the tribunal.

The justices of the Court of appeal, in a unanimous decision, on Wednesday, dismissed the appeal of PDP for lack of merit.

The judgement was delivered by Justice Yargata Nimpa, Justice Samuel Bola and Justice Paul Bassey.

Ruling on the appeal same Wednesday, the appellate court also dismissed the suit filed by the LP’s governorship candidate for lacking in merit.

In a unanimous decision, the three-man pane, led by Justice Yargata Nimpa, affirmed Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat as Governor and Deputy Governor of Lagos State.

The other two justices on the panel are Justice Samuel Bola and Justice Paul Bassey.
