Legal Fog Lifts: PDP Charts Path To Unity, Convention After Internal Strife

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

THE People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is mounting a concerted push to resolve its internal crises, with its Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Caretaker Committee doubling down on commitments to unity, respect for the judiciary, and preparations for long-overdue congresses.

Speaking at the 85th gathering of the PDP’s BoT in Abuja, its Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, underscored the party’s enduring strength, nationwide reach, and political legacy. He cautioned members against complacency, despite the party having weathered months of turbulence marked by leadership disputes and courtroom battles.

Ohuabunwa stated that the PDP’s survival was due to its robust institutions and adherence to constitutional order. He defended the delay in holding party congresses as a “deliberate and cautious” move taken out of respect for pending court cases, rather than an abdication of responsibility.

“The PDP chose legality over expediency and patience over provocation,” he asserted, adding that history would judge the party kindly for upholding the rule of law.

He welcomed recent court rulings, particularly a Federal High Court judgement in Ibadan which affirmed the legitimacy of the Abdulrahman-led Caretaker Committee, and urged all members to respect the judiciary.

“With the legal fog lifting, the focus must now shift to reconciliation, rebuilding trust and laying the groundwork for orderly congresses and a credible national convention,” Ohuabunwa said, describing unity as a strategic imperative.

In his own remarks, the National Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, thanked the BoT for its “steadfast support,” which he called crucial for stability. He also expressed gratitude to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for his backing.

Mohammed declared that the festive period was over and it was “time for decisive action” to deliver on the committee’s mandate. He confirmed the favourable Ibadan court judgement and promised imminent action.

“Any moment from now, we shall roll out a timetable for activities relating to outstanding congresses in some states, which will usher in a seamless national convention,” he disclosed.

He described the PDP as the only people-centred party with nationwide structures and verifiable legacies, warning they could not afford to “sleep on our hands.”

Both leaders expressed optimism that ongoing reconciliation efforts and the planned congresses would reposition the PDP as a strong and credible alternative on the Nigerian political stage.
