More hunger looms as no fewer than 45 farmers, by whose sweat and dint of hardwork Nigerians are being fed daily, have been hacked to death and scores injured following renewed hostilities in Lafia, Obi and Awe local government areas of Nasarawa State.
Stonix News reports that agriculture is the mainstay of Nasarawa State’s economy with the production of varieties of cash crops throughout the year such as yam, sweet potato and maize, among others which are transported to other parts of the country for consumption.
The killing of the 45 farmers, which could worsen the hunger in the land, reportedly started last week Friday morning and continued till last Sunday night, as sources said trouble began when a herder was killed by unidentified hoodlums on Friday at Obi.
There were reported reprisals the following day in more than 12 communities across the three local government areas of the state.
Following the clashes, thousands of farmers in the communities are said to have been displaced, while dozens of others, who sustained injuries, are currently receiving treatment at hospitals across the local government areas.
Meanwhile, the state governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Sule, who visited the troubled area condemned the act, describing the bloodletting as senseless and barbaric.
He tasked security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the act, saying all those involved would not be spared.
He urged the communities to live in peace, without which development would elude them.
In a related development, security agencies in Giwa Local Government Area have reported to the Kaduna State government the discovery of two additional bodies following last weekend’s Bandits’ attack in some villages in the area.
A statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, on Monday, said the bodies brings the death toll in the attack from 38 to 40 at
Kauran Fawa, Marke and Riheya villages at Idasu in Giwa Local Government Area of the state.
