Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has directed all commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators in the state to go register and be captured in the biometric registration exercise which started eight months ago.
He gave the directive on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, and made available to Stonix News in Delta.
Okowa said the exercise actually commenced since May, 2021, warning that defaulters “risks being banned from plying the roads within Delta State from 31st January, 2022.”
He also directed restrictions of movement of commercial tricycles and motorcycles in the state from 6.00a.m. to 9.00p.m. daily.
The government warned that only registered operators on essential and emergency duties, with proof of valid means of identification, are exempted outside the stipulated period.
“It is, hereby, announced for the information of the general public particularly Deltans that the Governor of Delta State, Sen. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa has directed that all Motorcycle (Okada) and Tricycle (Keke) Operators across the State must be registered and captured in the on-going biometric registration exercise which commenced in the State since May, 2021, or risk being banned from plying roads within Delta State, from 31″ January, 2022.
“In the same vein, the Governor has further directed that the operational hours for Okada and Keke Operators in the State should henceforth be restricted to the period of 6.00a.m to 9.00p.m daily.
“Only registered Operators on essential and emergency duties with proof of valid means of identification would be exempted outside the stipulated period.
“Anyone found in violation of this order would be subject to the full weight of the law,” the statement concluded.
Stonix News reports that criminals have been plying their trade in the state mostly using commercial tricycles and motorcycles as means of escape from scene of crime.
Besides, the number of commercial tricycles and motorcycles has tremendously increased since the former’s introduction in 2012 by the immediate past administration.
