Soun Strips APC Chieftain Of Traditional Title Over ‘Persistent Disrespect’

Blessing Bello, Reporting

THE Soun of Ogbomosoland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, has stripped a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Senator Adeseun, of his traditional title of Mayegun of Ogbomosoland with immediate effect.

The dramatic demotion comes amid an ongoing power play between the traditional ruler and the senator, tensions that have simmered since Oba Olaoye’s installation as the Soun.

According to a statement from the palace, the decision was precipitated by alleged misconduct and actions deemed unbecoming of the office. Oba Olaoye was said to be infuriated by what the palace described as a pattern of disrespect and a failure to render due honour to the Soun’s office.

The official letter conveying the suspension was issued on behalf of the monarch and signed by the Palace Secretary, Toyin Ajamu.

In the correspondence, the palace cited “sustained acts of insubordination, wilful disregard, and persistent disrespect” towards the palace and the traditional institution of the Soun.

The statement further noted that the senator’s conduct, observed over a considerable period, had become a source of grave concern and was deemed incompatible with the dignity and responsibilities inherent in the Mayegun title.

“As a chief of this Palace, your actions have fallen short of the standards expected and have demonstrated a disregard for the authority, traditions, and sanctity of the institution,” read part of the statement.

The suspension takes effect immediately. Senator Adeseun has been directed to cease presenting himself as the Mayegun of Ogbomosoland in any capacity, including at public events, official functions, and across all media platforms.

Ogbomosoland is renowned for its longstanding traditional structure, where chieftaincy titles carry profound cultural and social responsibilities. Analysts observing the development noted that the move underscores the continued influence of traditional institutions in enforcing discipline and upholding standards among title holders.

As of the time of this report, Senator Adeseun had yet to issue any public response to the suspension.

The palace expressed its expectation of full compliance with the directive, stressing the importance of safeguarding the integrity and authority of the traditional institution.
