NO fewer than 10 persons have lost their lives and hundreds more are behind bars across Kenya during anti-government demonstrations, following clashes between police and protesters in the country.

The Kenyan National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) accused the police of collaborating with criminal gangs, as a significant security presence left central Nairobi largely empty ahead of the annual Saba Saba (Seven Seven) Day protests.

The Saba Saba demonstrations are held to remember July 7, 1990, a pivotal day when Kenyans took to the streets to demand the restoration of multi-party democracy after years of authoritarian rule under then-President Daniel arap Moi.

In a statement released on Monday, the KNCHR reported it had recorded ten deaths and 29 injuries across 17 counties, though it did not disclose further specifics.

Meanwhile, a separate statement from the National Police Service (NPS) issued late Monday reported 11 deaths, along with 52 injured police officers and 11 wounded civilians.
