NO fewer than 61 migrants drowned in a shipwreck off the coast of Libya.
According to the International Organization of Migration (IOM), an intergovernmental group that is part of the United Nations network, women and children were among the dead.
“The Central Mediterranean continues to be one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes,” the group said on Saturday via a post on its social media handle.
Stonix News gathered that the vessel left Zwara, Libya, with about 86 people onboard.
IOM spokesperson, Flavio Di Giacomo confirmed that more than 2,250 people have drowned in the Central Mediterranean in 2023.
“A dramatic number which unfortunately demonstrates that not enough is being done to save lives at sea,” Giacomo added
As of the time of filing this report, IOM had not given full details on when the ship had sailed from the Libyan coastal city or details on how the wreck had occured.
