ALGON Donates 30 Patrol Vehicles to Security Agencies in Osun

Blessing Bello, Reporting

IN a major boost to state security, the Osun State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has handed over 30 operational vehicles to the police and other sister security agencies.

Tuesday’s donation builds on an earlier distribution of no fewer than 300 motorcycles by the association, aimed at strengthening safety across local communities.

Speaking at the event, ALGON chairman Abiodun Idowu said the gesture underscored the association’s unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of residents.

“The local government remains the tier of government closest to the people, and we are resolute in supporting every effort to ensure a safe environment,” he said.

Mr Idowu highlighted that increased financial and administrative autonomy had transformed local governance. “With increased autonomy, we are now better positioned to initiate and execute people-oriented programmes such as this distribution of security patrol motors. This is a clear testament to what can be achieved when governance is brought closer to the grassroots and when local authorities are trusted with the resources and responsibility to act.”

He described the provision of patrol vehicles as “not only a security intervention but also a practical demonstration of the effectiveness of local government autonomy in Nigeria”.

The chairman revealed that a total of 90 new security patrol vehicles, alongside other equipment, had been procured. “These will be handed over to our security agencies in batches before the end of this month of May 2025,” he said.

“No community can witness any development if security of lives and property is not guaranteed. The Nigerian Constitution emphasises that the security of lives and welfare of citizens are the primary roles of any government. We shall not depart from these roles.”

Mr Idowu reaffirmed ALGON’s pledge to continue leveraging autonomy for grassroots impact. “We will not relent in investing in initiatives that promote security, peace, and sustainable development.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Umar Shehu Nadada, commended ALGON’s Osun chapter for donating the operational vehicles, noting that the move would significantly strengthen security operations across the state.
