TWO weeks ago, I had my first contact with my 100-level students at KolaDaisi University, Ibadan. I teach them GST 111, Communication in English.
In the course of the class, I was inspired to counsel them. As fresh students, they need the right counsel to navigate their way and excel in their academic pursuits.

I explained to them that every student should understand what works for them and identify their strengths and weaknesses. While some students read and comprehend during the daytime, others can only comprehend at night. Meanwhile, some assimilate better in the early hours of the day.
Some people find it easy to stay awake at night but some cannot go beyond 10:00p.m. In fact, a young lady once told me she literally shuts down after 9:00p.m. We are wired differently. Each person is unique.
Dear student, you are unique. Identify your unique features. Know what works for you. If you find it difficult to stay awake at night, no matter how you try, maximise your daytime. If you cannot comprehend much during the day, discipline yourself to read early in the morning or at night.
There are some people who can read and comprehend in a noisy environment; they have the capacity to block out the noise somehow. However, some people cannot read in a noisy place; they can’t cope.
What works for you? You need to identify that asap.
You are unique! Therefore, identify your unique features; this is how you can succeed in life.
