Africa Has Done It Again, As Coup Succeeds In Gabon

Ilori Ogunmola, Reporting

THE continent of Africa has done it again barely a month after aggrieved soldiers booted out the democratically-elected president of the Republic of Niger.

This time around, it is the Gabonese President, Ali Bongo, that was successfully deposed by the military in the Central African region a day after winning another presidential election.

Soldiers were said to have appeared on Gabonese national television in Gabon to announce that they had taken power, BBC has reported.

The putschist also announced the annulment of Saturday’s election and the dissolution of the democratic government in the country.

Bongo came to power after the death of his father in 2009, won a third term in an election which opposition argued was heavily disputed.
