Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting
It’s not a pleasant news in the new month of December as COVID-19 Omicron variant hits Nigeria with the confirmation of first case by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday morning.
This was disclosed in a press statement issued by the centre and signed by the Director-General, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa.
The first case of Omicron variant, it will be recalled, was reported by South Africa, but was first detected in Botswana.
Two cases of the variant from two passengers from Nigeria were also reportedly discovered in Canada.
The discovery of the new strain of the disease has led to drastic measures being taken by the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Israel.
These countries have consequently placed a swift travel ban on southern African countries.
Disclosing on Wednesday in the statement, the NCDC said two cases of the variant were discovered through genomic sequencing, linking the two cases to two passengers from South Africa.
