BREAKING: Nigeria Back To Old National Anthem As Tinubu Signs Bill Into Law

PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assented to the Bill that reverts Nigeria to the Old National Anthem.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, revealed this at the Joint Sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate to mark the 25 years of unbroken Democratic Dispensation in Nigeria.

He said President Tinubu joined the Joint Sitting of the National in commemoration and in symbolic to the now assented National Anthem.

The House had last week passed a Bill to revert to the Old National Anthem and their counterparts at Senate, on Tuesday, also passed the Bill which has now been assented to by the President.

The Bill, sponsored by the House Majority Leader, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, was for Nigerians to act according to the lyrics contained in the National Anthem.

According to the Majority Leader, Nigerians have repeatedly, in several occasions, sung the dropped National Anthem without adhering to those patriotic lyrics contained in Anthem.

According to the sponsor of the bill and the Leader of the House, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, the old National Anthem, written by Lilian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Benda, is a nostalgic reminder of Nigeria’s rich history and cultural heritage.

He explained that its lyrics evoke a sense of national pride and unity, and its revival is expected to promote a sense of national identity among Nigerians.

Professor. Ihonvbere had argued that the old national anthem is an integral part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage and should be restored to its former place of honor.

Nigeria, We Hail Thee was composed by Lillian Jean Williams in 1959 and the Music produced by Frances Berda, 1959 and adopted on October 1, 1960 to 1978.

Below is the lyrics of the old anthem:

BREAKING: Nigeria Back To Old National Anthem As Tinubu Signs Bill Into Law

The old anthem

Nigeria We Hail Thee

Nigeria we hail thee

Our own dear native land

Though tribes and tongue may differ

In brotherhood we stand

Nigerians all, are proud to serve

Our sovereign Motherland.

Our flag shall be a symbol

That truth and justice reign

In peace or battle honour’d,

And this we count as gain,

To hand on to our children

A banner without stain.

O God of all creation

Grant this our one request.

Help us to build a nation

Where no man is oppressed

And so with peace and plenty

Nigeria shall be blessed.
